skylar unveiled

  • Posted on August 12, 2012 at 12:28 pm

we just got back from holidays and here is the first picture of skylar/pio. i’ll get more up when i get more edited but i have over 500 pictures to go through! this will be her hair color, but she has blue/green eyes coming to match her big sister ananda, and apparently i went overly subtle on the freckles for this last bunch of faceups because they are almost impossible to photograph. of course it is threatening to rain again today so i have time to decide if i want to enhance them. anyway meet skylar…

introducing noah

  • Posted on April 24, 2012 at 10:25 am

the weather was finally warm enough yesterday to do faceups. of the three i started only one got done. i have to wipe the other two down and start over, i sprayed to thickly and got bubbles. i have another girl who’s faceup also needs redoing. it doesn’t have any flaws really, i just don’t like it. it just leaves me cold.

anyway, my pukifee boy noah came out perfectly. he is just as i’d imagined. even the hair ended up right, inspite of a few mishaps. i tried him first in a carrot red synthetic wig. the color was great but i couldn’t get the hair short enough without getting bald spots. (kind of like my first attempts at cutting my barbie’s hair when i was a kid )

next i tried the two mohair wigs i’d picked up or him. with some judicious cutting (read hacking randomly with scissors ;)) i got the styles i liked, but the color was all wrong. the first one , which was supposed to be auburn, arrived as a dark brown with a slight reddish tinge in bright sunlight. very cute but definitely did not go with his red eyebrows and freckles. the other wig was blonde, and i had planned to dye it carrot red. which is what i proceeded to do…

unfortunately it was late, and i was tired, so i wasn’t thinking clearly and vigorously rubbed the dye in, and then just as vigorously rinsed it out – forgetting the mohair felts! i picked at it a bit then gave up and left it overnight to dry.

this morning it didn’t look much better, but with nothing else working, i figured i’d plunk it on noah’s head and use it till i could figure out a replacement. to my shock, and pleased surprise it was perfect, or almost so. i turned under the elastic band, which showed up to clearly now that the wig was darker and voila, noah arrived!

now my only problem is i only planned to have girls this size, so i have no clothes for him, hence the paper towel toga 😆

eyelash heaven

i love doing face ups and seeing how i improve with practice, but always hated adding the lashes ’cause i just couldn’t seem to get the hang of it. it would usually take half an hour of fighting and glue everywhere! not to mention i would be unhappy with the result. so when trying on a dress caused ember’s lashes to come partly unstuck i decided to try andreja’s method and it worked amazingly. who would have guessed that cutting them in pieces and using tweezers instead of trying to push a full length strip into place with a toothpick made such a difference. less than a minute per eye and i have perfect lashes!

introducing digory

  • Posted on June 25, 2011 at 12:44 pm

digory with enhanced faceup and body blushing our house has grown with the addition of a boy!  this is digory a white skinned littlefee boy.  when he arrived i found the skin color too stark and wondered how he’d ever blend in with the rest of us. the other surprise was that the 6/7 wig he was supposed to wear turned out to be way too big.  so there he sat waiting for a long time.  after a lot of thought and research i decided to enhance his default faceup (which i also wasn’t all that thrilled with.)   i added extra blushing and freckles, then cut all the curls off of an auburn  5/6 girls wig to  make him into a pale redhead. i love how he turned out.

digory is a real boy. he was not impressed that i didn’t have a shirt for him yet. “look lady” he said “don’t you know redheads burn easily?”  i think he is going to shake things up as the girls have been quiet and ladylike so far.

my first (and second) faceup part 5

here are the sister’s together, all done and ready to try on new clothes,  so that’s my next project.  🙂
ananda and ellyce

and just because i think the girls are truly adorable here are pictures of them separately:

and ananda
ananda
her new hair color is reddish blonde. it was supposed to be carrot colored, but has just a hint of red.   it looks both redder and darker in the picture than it really is.

now they have lashes and eyes.

ananda wigless
ananda has lovely new glass eyes.

ellyce wigless
ellyce has to wait for her new eyecolor. she was supposed to fit either 12mm or 14mm but the 14’s were much to big for the socket and i didn’t have another pair of 12’s, so they are now on order.

my first (and second) faceup part 3

the faceups continue, many layers of paint later the girls are done and waiting for the varnish to dry around the eyes so that they can get lashes, eyes and wigs.
i used mostly pastels to color them, rubbing the pastels on sandpaper to get my pallet then applying it with a variety of brushes and q-tips. the eyebrows were done with pastels and watercolor pencils and the lashes with thinned down acrylic paint.

here is ananda

and ellyce
ellyce eyeless 2

ellyce eyeless

i’m surprised at how different they look even though i used similar painting schemes and the sculpt is identical for both. ellyce’s shorter neck makes her face look chubbier.

my first (and second) faceup part 2: mr super clear and the paint hood

  • Posted on May 22, 2011 at 12:07 am

i decided to do ananda’s little sister ellyce at the same time as ananada.  it allows me to work on one while the paint/sealant dries on the other.

so to give ellyce equal time, here she is as she first arrived with default eyes and wig,

deardoll shabee panda suit

here she is ready for her first coat of mr super clear. her body is adorable and very posable but desperately needs heavier string!

deardoll in paintbox

and here is the fume hood she is sitting in.

the paint hood
the hood was built for michael by his dad, for painting his guitars. the white rectangle in the back is a filter/fan which leads to a long vent hose that we put up in the window when the hood is on. the vent is attached to a piece of wood that blocks the rest of the window opening so the fumes don’t blow back in. the box is just that, a box. the front flap folds up to close after painting to “seal” it. and is held closed by moving the tool box (seen on the left) in front. simple, but effective. it doesn’t block 100% of the fumes. we still paint with a respirator on, but it keeps most of them out of the basement where michael lives. there is also a light inside at the top, so you can see what you are painting.

my first faceup: part1

my cans of mr superclear finally arrived – by sea all the way from  hong kong, no less –  so i’m ready to try my first face-up ever.  my first victim – er i mean subject – is my cousin ananda, a dollmore, narsha friend shabee. she’s been looking very pale and ghostlike ever since she came to live with us, and begged to be the first to get a facial.

in the spirit of true makeover articles, i will start with the before shots.   this will show what she looked for to start with.  i apologize in advance for the crummy lighting.  they were taken in the bedroom and the light through the curtains makes her look very greenish.  i assure you she is not normally green!

ananda pre-faceup here she is looking as she did when she first arrived.

ananda pre-faceup this is a closer look at her face.

even without makeup she is very cute!

ananda pre-faceup with her wig and eyes removed for protection from the first spray coat.  she will be getting a new hair color and changing her eye color as well, but that’s no reason to muck them up with spray 🙂

ananda pre-faceup another angle.

she is trying to be patient with all these photos but is really ready to start!
