30 day photo challenge day 3 part 2

  • Posted on December 16, 2011 at 6:45 pm

fast forward several hours. i was still disappointed with my challenge pictures from earlier, but all that was about to change. enter a mischievous little sprite named smidge. smidge was playing in the kitchen and somehow got up onto my knickknack shelf. peeking out through a lazer sculpture a friend brought back from a mexican vacation, she was grinning engagingly and then i saw it. look at me
lovely reflections serendipitously staring back at me…
i grabbed my camera and began to shoot.

3. reflections

today’s challenge was unexpectedly difficult. i started off to just do this one quickly as i didn’t have much time. we dragged some large books to the french doors and eilidh clambered up for our first attempt. in spite of all the smudges on the door we did get a reflection but it was disappointingly faint.
out the door
eilidh’s curls were glowing in the sunlight making for a surprisingly lovely picture, but not right for the challenge.

we moved over to the window and she obligingly jumped up. this time the only reflection was of the reflector i was using to enhance the back lighting. definitely not what i had in mind!
only a reflector
further attempts only yielded the same result, so it was time to move on.

which we did, to the other side of the house and a west facing window. since the reflection was so faint in the strong east light i thought moving to the shadowy side might help, and it did – to a degree
faint shadow
this time i could actually see her face in the reflection. it was still very washed out, but i decided that it would have to do, since i had run out of time.

2) a picture of your doll next to a stack of unusual objects that equal their approximate height.

at first i was tempted to measure them against chocolate chips, because everything goes well with chocolate. πŸ˜‰ but then i figured, that in keeping with the one blue-stocking theme, it would be much better to measure the girls against a stack of yarn or books…. ever indecisive i used both! πŸ™‚
how tall am i?
so, one littlefee, eilidh, is equal to 7 partly used balls of yarn or 16 miniature books.
one pukifee, crystalorn, is equal to 4 partly used balls of yarn or 9-1/2 miniature books
one realpuki, smidge, (with wild hair) is equal to 2 partly used balls of yarn or 7 miniature books (or so she claims and who am i to argue?)

…….and beezie (up on top) claims she is the biggest of them all! πŸ˜†

30 day photo challenge day 1

i was chatting on doa and someone mention doing a 30 day challenge, which got me thinking. i don’t take photos regularly and when i do i often forget to edit/post them. so i decided to turn it into a 30 day photo challenge. each day i will post a subject and have to take a picture of it. if i miss a day i’ll start again the next (since i’m going over christmas i’m sure to miss some!), but my goal is to do this as consistently as possible. i have all of the days preplanned, thanks in large part to photo game challenges on doa.

if anyone wants to join in, just comment on the posting with your url and i’ll add a link to your blog/site.

so, on to the first challenge:split personality:one doll multiple wigs.

i was going to do this challenge with my jid asa, who just can’t seem to find the right wig. but eilidh said her wig just wasn’t right either and could she please try on some new ones? please, please, please? so here goes…
original
elidlh’s original wig. the color was good but the wig style was kind of blah and matted really easily.

blonde and brown
this is really not her color! and the style which looks lovely on some of the “older” girls just isn’t right on eilidh.

crazy curls
closer, the color is not bad, but the style is not quite there. she might borrow this one occasionally. but i think ananda gets to keep this one.

dark auburn
love this color but the style is definitely too babyish! ellyce gets her wig back ;O)

brown pigtails
not bad, color is good, but it just doesn’t work for me somehow. i think she loses character with this one, she is just too ordinary.

dark brown
she does make a lovely brunette, but blends in too much with my other girls this way.

carrot curls
now that’s better. my spunky little carrot top is back!

straight red
a little more muted red but i think this one suits her too. i think she will probably go back and forth between the last two. my girls all like at least a couple of choices for variety.

all tuckered out

all tuckered out
we’re all sick with colds here. so not much time to blog. but this was a rather cute picture of digory sleeping with his favorite blanket

still waiting

early as i got up this morning, someone else was up first. i came downstairs to see noni sitting on my sewing machine. do you have pink ones made yet? she queried. i NEEDS pink!

working on a pjs pattern

  • Posted on November 21, 2011 at 3:55 pm

i want to make the girls new pajamas for christmas. i found a really cute red knit with white snowflakes on it to make them with. but first i have to get a pattern that fits.

noni volunteered to be my model for the little girls on the condition that i make her a pair of pink ones, since that is her “favoritist” color.

i made the first trial from a lovely soft blue cotton velour. unfortunately it was just to bulky for the wee ones.
first try
noni said they were way too hot, and not PINK!

next i tried a lightweight knit. the fabric is from a jersey sheet i got cheap to use as test fabric. the pattern is printed crooked so it really doesn’t work for anything else. i realized after i sewed them up that i did the bottoms on the “wrong” side and the top on the “right”. oh well they are just to test for fit anyway.
better
i think the legs need to be a smidge longer. when i made them snugger in the crotch it cut a bit too much off the leg length.

noni says they are much more comfortable but still NOT PINK!

then she noticed the elastic hanging down the back.
cailyn look
look she said
i gots a tail
i gots a tail!

failure

If at first you don’t succeed, you are running about average.

that seemed an apt quote for what i’ve been doing lately. i want to get an etsy store up and running but i seem to be running in circles instead. i’ve been making up a bunch of crocheted hats for pukifee and littlefee sizes (sneak peak under crochet) so i decided i should get faces on some of my other kids to give me a wider range of models.

i finally got my littlefee pipi and bid elin done after three days and 3-4 wipes each. i kept getting fuzz in the msc no matter how carefully i cleaned (i want a hermetically sealed room for faceups!) i’m very pleased with the results but if these had been my first face-ups. i’m not sure i’d have ever tried again.

anyhoo, here is becca (iplehouse bid elin)
becca

and eilidh???
eilidh2
my red-haired freckly girl seemed to cry out for a celtic name so i have tentatively called her eilidh (eh-lee) but i’m not completely sold on it. she still may end up as polly which was her planned name, i just don’t know. any thoughts?

to be continued….

learning to sew again

  • Posted on November 3, 2011 at 4:52 pm

i just finished taking a course on sewing knits so i could make t-shirts for everyone. unfortunately the class ended up being designed for people who really didn’t know how to sew, so it mostly turned into 2-1/2 hours a week that i could dedicate to sewing with no distractions. probably worth it if that was all i got out of it, but i did learn a few good tricks and was able to extrapolate on some of her other ideas to solve my main problems, so it was a good class.

kiri volunteered to come with me and be a test model. (once she volunteered all the little girls wanted to come, but there just wasn’t enough room.) it was nice to have some one on one time, something sorely lacking around here some days πŸ™‚

most of what i did was trying different ideas, which made for interesting t-shirts with each seam done differently πŸ˜† however i did get one jacket almost finished. i forgot to bring the buttons with me, and the pattern will require some tweaking before i do the next one, but i think it ended up cute anyway and kiri gets to keep this one for her help instead of selling it on etsy.

anyway here is a picture of her in the unfinished jacket
my test model
just ignore the pin and pretend it has buttons

kiri also decided to cut her hair. she said it kept getting in the way when she was taking her shirt on and off. we trimmed it into this short bubble cut and now her straight hair has some wave to it, who knew? i think it looks cute and really suits her

bow glacier falls with digory

  • Posted on October 26, 2011 at 9:34 am

lunch break

today we decided to hike to bow glacier falls, an amazing hike. it was a cool drizzly day, the kind i like best for hiking in. just cool enough to not overheat, enough rain to be refreshing, and enough sun to not get more than damp. digory wore his new red sweater to keep warm. i need to make him a raincoat if we are going to go hiking often. but in typical boy fashion a little mud and water with no soap in sight just made it all the more fun!

the rocks were amazingly diverse, scattered across the valley where the glacier had advanced and receded long ago. the rocks mixed with iron oxide had rusty orange patterns, i nice change from the usual gray rocks found around here.

digory at bow glacier falls 2

the water tumbled over the cliffs in large and small streams so we ended up hiking through the low creek beds which covered the whole valley.Β  i’m sure later in the season it is drier but fording the water on larger rocks was actually kind of fun.Β  it was challenging to find larger rocks on which to rest and look around.Β  we took advantage of the ones we found.
