my supposedly preshrunk mercerized cotton shrunk just enough after dyeing that now the cap is too small. i stretched it as much as possible and it still goes round her head but you can see that it is now too short. 🙁 i have ordered more yarn in the right color, since the reason i dyed this in the first place is that i can only get white locally. i will probably put a white lacy trim on the too small caps for her to wear when she just doesn’t feel like bothering with hair, so it won’t be a total loss, but still….
in the meantime, i wound off a small skein of yarn and dyed it with coffee again. as soon as it finishes drying i will make another cap (or 2)
ruby looks as disgruntled as i am. mercerized cotton is NOT supposed to shrink. that is one of the reasons i used it instead of one of the dozens of other fine yarns i have lying around.
set back and regroup
building the perfect wig step 2
the next step is to coffee dye the wig caps so they arent so blinding white. this will hopefully help them blend in a bit better with the hair and scalp
much better
more beige than pink, but without actually dyeing them this is about as close as i will get i think. now they just have to dry, and hopefully won’t lighten up too much as they do!
building the perfect wig step 1
today i am trying to design the “perfect fit” wig for my pukipuki. step one is designing a wig cap the fits perfectly and doesn’t pop off right away. this involved a lot of stitching, frogging and re-stitching till i finally got the shape exactly the way i wanted.
it also involves fine crochet cotton, a very small hook and a tiny safety pin for a moveable stitch marker
i couldn’t figure out how to do a video and get it in focus but the cap stays on even if i shake her. (don’t worry no dollies were harmed during the shaking, and ruby was happy to help with the demonstration) hopefully that will still hold true once i add the hair and it gets heavier, but for now i am quite pleased with the fit!
first etsy sale
i made my first sale on etsy this week. you wouldn’t think it would be that big of a deal. i’ve been selling bears and patterns for almost 20 years now. but this is a new direction for me and hopefully a change in what i’m doing. bjd’s allow me to incorporate so many more crafts than anything i’ve ever done before. i can knit, crochet, sew, quilt, bead, needle-felt, woodwork.. well you get the idea. for someone with craft add they are perfect! i can keep changing without switching hobbies all the time 😆 anyway i sold a hat this week and hopefully it’s the first of many
i’ve been working like crazy on a new line for my minifees. we’re going to lake louise later this month and i want to take a bunch of clothes along and do a photo shoot in and around the chateau – depending on the weather of course. ananda got a new face up in preparation. poor girl fell and chipped her’s earlier this fall. and i desperately need to figure out how to fix ember and shaelyn’s bodies so that they will pose properly before then. if anyone has any ideas on how to fix recalcitrant minifee bodies please post suggestions in the comment section!
animal hats
so i promise this won’t become just another store, but right now most of my pictures are of the stuff i’m listing for sale and i just had to show off these hats for my littlefees that kiri was kind enough to model just in time for halloween
a giraffe
a duck
and a funny blue monster
enjoy and if you like have a peek at onebluestocking on etsy for more stuff including hats in pukifee sizes 🙂
etsy store is open
i just posted my first listing on etsy :tapdances around the room.
i have a long way to go to finish stocking it, but the first item is up so at least i have finally made a start, after all the delays and procrastination. i have 21 dress, 28 nap blankets and a whole pile of hats ready to go so decided to just get there and start listing even of all the pictures haven’t been taken. the weather isn’t cooperating today anyway so i’ll try to finish up the pictures of what i’ve got done over the next week. then i’ll be able to start on some new stuff with a clear conscience.
blocking dresses
the parade, and everything else has been put on hold this week as i try to finish up last minute stuff to open up my new etsy store. after months of research, delays and procrastination i am committed to getting it open by next friday at the latest.
after spending the summer crocheting pukifee dresses from assorted cotton sewing thread, i sorted them by color and washed and blocked them. once they dry i will thread a ribbon around the middle, then i need to make petticoats to go with them.
ember and shaelyn
here’s a quick comparison of ember and shaelyn, taken together ’cause someone commented that the girls looked a lot alike. when you see them together the similarities are mostly superficial – they both have heart shaped faces, but not much else the same.
they haven’t been getting a lot of camera time lately. both of them are on really gimpy bodies that need fixing but i’ve had a lot of time and health issues this year and haven’t been able to attend to theirs. hopefully we will get that cleared up one of these days, because they both are lovely girls and deserve more time.
in like a lion
my shy little girl looks more like the cowardly lion i think. at any rate, no one could be scared of her 😉
if it looks like a duck…
this is actually a pukifee hat, but i think tiera looks cute in it
if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck….put it back in the oven!
