still waiting

  • Posted on November 23, 2011 at 12:22 am

early as i got up this morning, someone else was up first. i came downstairs to see noni sitting on my sewing machine. do you have pink ones made yet? she queried. i NEEDS pink!

working on a pjs pattern

  • Posted on November 21, 2011 at 3:55 pm

i want to make the girls new pajamas for christmas. i found a really cute red knit with white snowflakes on it to make them with. but first i have to get a pattern that fits.

noni volunteered to be my model for the little girls on the condition that i make her a pair of pink ones, since that is her “favoritist” color.

i made the first trial from a lovely soft blue cotton velour. unfortunately it was just to bulky for the wee ones.
first try
noni said they were way too hot, and not PINK!

next i tried a lightweight knit. the fabric is from a jersey sheet i got cheap to use as test fabric. the pattern is printed crooked so it really doesn’t work for anything else. i realized after i sewed them up that i did the bottoms on the “wrong” side and the top on the “right”. oh well they are just to test for fit anyway.
better
i think the legs need to be a smidge longer. when i made them snugger in the crotch it cut a bit too much off the leg length.

noni says they are much more comfortable but still NOT PINK!

then she noticed the elastic hanging down the back.

patterns in the snow

snow on tiles

i loved the patten the snow made as it was melting. snow seldom lasts here. it just gives us teasing tastes of spring so far off as we are barely into winter. but at least we can dream….

fungi in the snow

i loved the contrast in textures.Β  i’m more into capturing details usually than the big pictures. to me they have more “scope for the imagination”

chipmunk (a most unimaginative title)

chipmunk

the chipmunks at glacier park are more wary than the ones we see at banff. they tend to be poised for flight instead of hamming it up for the camera. that makes it more rewarding when they are successfully caught on “film”

experience

experience is a dim lamp, which only lights the one who bears it.

becca is feeling sad today. she went to the optometrist on friday and found out she has to wear glasses. i told her it’s not so bad, that i’ve worn them since i was small and she’ll get used to them, but she said “none of the other little girls wear glasses” and refused to be comforted.

oddly enough, i seldom re-read my blog posts after i have posted them. so when i did look back through the archives yesterday, i was rather surprised to see how often i jump from pictures taken the day of the post, to pictures taken over the summer that i just haven’t done anything with before. looking through the blog would lead one to believe that our weather/seasons switch constantly back and forth. now while that is true to a large degree here, we don’t usually have flowers blooming in november. πŸ˜‰

however staying consistent with my inconsistencies, i have for your amusement today some lovely yellow flowers that brighten up my day at least, and help me forget, for a moment or two, that it snowed last night.

enjoy

canada post, grrr

so i was in a realpuki swap, and after i got everything made and packaged, i trundled off to the post office to get the parcel weighed and measured. dutifully handing over my money for postage, i was assured the parcel should arrive in 5-7 days. imagine my surprise when a week later it showed up not at my swap partners door, but back in our mail box! it had a sticker on it saying i owed 4 cents postage. 4 cents!. there was almost $8 dollars postage on it and they quibble over 4 cents???
especially after “they” told me how much it would cost in the first place?

however nothing to do but go back to the post office, pay my 4 cents and send it off again…
which i did….
however, in spite of the label clearly stating i owed 4 cents, the lady at the post office insisted on weighing and measuring it again, and informing me i didn’t owe 4 cents……
nope, i owed 7 cents…..
only canada post πŸ˜†
here’s hoping it doesn’t come back again :sigh

mistakes

Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep. (scott adams)

so continuing on from my last blog, i was putting the eyelashes on becca and polly (eilidh decided she prefers polly and refuses to be called anything else), and decided that tiera could do with a new set, because hers were looking decidedly scruffy. they came off easily enough, but when i tried to take the glue off, her eyeshadow came off with it. big chunks. there was nothing to do but wipe her down and start again.

after my problems with becca and polly i was understandably nervous, but tiera is a much more cooperative soul and came back the first try. i am actually quite happy now that i had to redo her. she is still definitely my tiera, but her face is softer, i’m getting better at eyebrows, and apparently she has been sneaking outside without sunscreen, because she has a light dusting of freckles on her nose now. i love her new look but you can judge for yourself

here she is before:

and after

now i’m psyched and think that ananada ans ellyce could do with a new face!……..but maybe not today πŸ™‚

failure

If at first you don’t succeed, you are running about average.

that seemed an apt quote for what i’ve been doing lately. i want to get an etsy store up and running but i seem to be running in circles instead. i’ve been making up a bunch of crocheted hats for pukifee and littlefee sizes (sneak peak under crochet) so i decided i should get faces on some of my other kids to give me a wider range of models.

i finally got my littlefee pipi and bid elin done after three days and 3-4 wipes each. i kept getting fuzz in the msc no matter how carefully i cleaned (i want a hermetically sealed room for faceups!) i’m very pleased with the results but if these had been my first face-ups. i’m not sure i’d have ever tried again.

anyhoo, here is becca (iplehouse bid elin)
becca

and eilidh???
eilidh2
my red-haired freckly girl seemed to cry out for a celtic name so i have tentatively called her eilidh (eh-lee) but i’m not completely sold on it. she still may end up as polly which was her planned name, i just don’t know. any thoughts?

to be continued….
