working on a pjs pattern

  • Posted on November 21, 2011 at 3:55 pm

i want to make the girls new pajamas for christmas. i found a really cute red knit with white snowflakes on it to make them with. but first i have to get a pattern that fits.

noni volunteered to be my model for the little girls on the condition that i make her a pair of pink ones, since that is her “favoritist” color.

i made the first trial from a lovely soft blue cotton velour. unfortunately it was just to bulky for the wee ones.
first try
noni said they were way too hot, and not PINK!

next i tried a lightweight knit. the fabric is from a jersey sheet i got cheap to use as test fabric. the pattern is printed crooked so it really doesn’t work for anything else. i realized after i sewed them up that i did the bottoms on the “wrong” side and the top on the “right”. oh well they are just to test for fit anyway.
better
i think the legs need to be a smidge longer. when i made them snugger in the crotch it cut a bit too much off the leg length.

noni says they are much more comfortable but still NOT PINK!

then she noticed the elastic hanging down the back.

mistakes

Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep. (scott adams)

so continuing on from my last blog, i was putting the eyelashes on becca and polly (eilidh decided she prefers polly and refuses to be called anything else), and decided that tiera could do with a new set, because hers were looking decidedly scruffy. they came off easily enough, but when i tried to take the glue off, her eyeshadow came off with it. big chunks. there was nothing to do but wipe her down and start again.

after my problems with becca and polly i was understandably nervous, but tiera is a much more cooperative soul and came back the first try. i am actually quite happy now that i had to redo her. she is still definitely my tiera, but her face is softer, i’m getting better at eyebrows, and apparently she has been sneaking outside without sunscreen, because she has a light dusting of freckles on her nose now. i love her new look but you can judge for yourself

here she is before:

now i’m psyched and think that ananada ans ellyce could do with a new face!……..but maybe not today ๐Ÿ™‚

failure

If at first you donโ€™t succeed, you are running about average.

that seemed an apt quote for what i’ve been doing lately. i want to get an etsy store up and running but i seem to be running in circles instead. i’ve been making up a bunch of crocheted hats for pukifee and littlefee sizes (sneak peak under crochet) so i decided i should get faces on some of my other kids to give me a wider range of models.

i finally got my littlefee pipi and bid elin done after three days and 3-4 wipes each. i kept getting fuzz in the msc no matter how carefully i cleaned (i want a hermetically sealed room for faceups!) i’m very pleased with the results but if these had been my first face-ups. i’m not sure i’d have ever tried again.

anyhoo, here is becca (iplehouse bid elin)
becca

and eilidh???
eilidh2
my red-haired freckly girl seemed to cry out for a celtic name so i have tentatively called her eilidh (eh-lee) but i’m not completely sold on it. she still may end up as polly which was her planned name, i just don’t know. any thoughts?

to be continued….

learning to sew again

  • Posted on November 3, 2011 at 4:52 pm

i just finished taking a course on sewing knits so i could make t-shirts for everyone. unfortunately the class ended up being designed for people who really didn’t know how to sew, so it mostly turned into 2-1/2 hours a week that i could dedicate to sewing with no distractions. probably worth it if that was all i got out of it, but i did learn a few good tricks and was able to extrapolate on some of her other ideas to solve my main problems, so it was a good class.

kiri volunteered to come with me and be a test model. (once she volunteered all the little girls wanted to come, but there just wasn’t enough room.) it was nice to have some one on one time, something sorely lacking around here some days ๐Ÿ™‚

most of what i did was trying different ideas, which made for interesting t-shirts with each seam done differently ๐Ÿ˜† however i did get one jacket almost finished. i forgot to bring the buttons with me, and the pattern will require some tweaking before i do the next one, but i think it ended up cute anyway and kiri gets to keep this one for her help instead of selling it on etsy.

anyway here is a picture of her in the unfinished jacket
my test model
just ignore the pin and pretend it has buttons

kiri also decided to cut her hair. she said it kept getting in the way when she was taking her shirt on and off. we trimmed it into this short bubble cut and now her straight hair has some wave to it, who knew? i think it looks cute and really suits her

bow glacier falls with digory

  • Posted on October 26, 2011 at 9:34 am

lunch break

today we decided to hike to bow glacier falls, an amazing hike. it was a cool drizzly day, the kind i like best for hiking in. just cool enough to not overheat, enough rain to be refreshing, and enough sun to not get more than damp. digory wore his new red sweater to keep warm. i need to make him a raincoat if we are going to go hiking often. but in typical boy fashion a little mud and water with no soap in sight just made it all the more fun!

the rocks were amazingly diverse, scattered across the valley where the glacier had advanced and receded long ago. the rocks mixed with iron oxide had rusty orange patterns, i nice change from the usual gray rocks found around here.

the water tumbled over the cliffs in large and small streams so we ended up hiking through the low creek beds which covered the whole valley.ย  i’m sure later in the season it is drier but fording the water on larger rocks was actually kind of fun.ย  it was challenging to find larger rocks on which to rest and look around.ย  we took advantage of the ones we found.

pukifee swap

  • Posted on October 17, 2011 at 1:02 pm

noni is happily modeling a mix and match set of clothes i made for a swap.
smilga top skirt
the hat is a very bright pink mohair that was hard to capture on film. it matches much better in real life. the ribbon is hand dyed silk, the skirt is cotton and the t-shirt a cute cotton knit print i found.ย  she is also wearing the the short leggings n this photo but you can’t see them.

smilga top capris

so here they are.

smilga dress and leggings

a sundress and longer leggings, which i apparently forgot to photograph before sending them off.ย  the are turquoise blue with darker blue/purple dots

smilga jacket and dress

and if she is chilly, the t-shirt can be reversed to make a short jacket.

funky crocheted hats

  • Posted on October 16, 2011 at 9:16 pm

i’ve been busy making crocheted hats for the little ones. they might need to wear warm hats as the weather cools, but that doesn’t mean they have to be boring. we took a short trip to banff to see the fall colors and 4 of the kids came with me to show off some prototypes for a new line of hats i’m making

crystalorn frog princess
crystalorn loved the frog prince hat and said “its a frog princess!”

amber
amberglas pretended to be a swamp creature rising out of the marsh

crystalorn and amberglas
when they quit giggling long enough the girls posed for this shot.

kiri, crystalorn and amberglas
then they climbed up with kiri so i could take a picture of all the girls, i think crystalorn was getting tired, ’cause she was getting really snuggly with her big sister

digory muppet hat
digory like the muppet style hat but didn’t want to be in a photograph with the “girls”. he says quinn needs a hat so the boys can hang out instead.

btw kiri and amber’s lovely new hoodies are from spampy’s stuff

fun with photoshop

i was editing some of my shops and started fooling around with some of the editing tools. i got a couple of pictures that i thought were kind of neat.
here is one of crystalorn posterized

and one of amberglas turned into a painting

now if only i could paint that well!
