monet’s garden dress

  • Posted on June 23, 2017 at 9:01 am

you got a glimpse of megs new dress in my last post , but here it is in all it’s glory

monets garden dress

this is one of the dresses i made for the esk persian dreams kal. i took quick pics done just to verify i had finished the hexes dresses for my kal, but meg couldnโ€™t resist trying this one on. this is one of those hate to love colors. it was pretty in the skein, muddled when wound and then started looking like clown barf when i started my โ€œhexโ€. luckily i persevered because now it reminds me more of a monet garden painting.

now i really need to make her some proper leggings to wear under it before we go to the wedding next week

all done and blocking

got the border finished. now time to soak it and block it flat. i tried out my new blocking wires. once i threaded it through the edges and figured out how to pin it, i was impressed with how easy it is to block straight and square.

blocking

went to publish this post and found out someone had hacked my blog and replaced my posts with a bunch of yucky pictures. i almost cried. luckily my husband was able to delete it all and use the backup to get my posts back. if you happened to come here while the x-rated stuff was up, you have my sincerest apologies and hopefully we have got it fixed so they can’t come back!

nearing completion

working on the borders now. a good border ties all the colors together and is like a frame for the main picture. this afghan seemed to require a more elaborate “frame” than just a simple sc border. i’m liking it so far, though my need for a good blocking becomes more evident the further i get.

it’s all coming together now

crocheting the squares together took a surprisingly long time. i single crocheted around each square with natural then single crocheted it together with the next block(s) through the back loop of each adjoining side. my squares all look biased for some reason, i’ve never had that happen before. i’m hoping it will block out

coming together

getting closer

the last row of the granny squares are done – dark brown for the water soaked driftwood we would collect as we wandered the shore and the edge of the ocean.

driftwood

although the colors are more muted than the rainbow brights my grandmother most often used and this is soft wool rather than the hard wearing acrylic she employed, it still reminds me of the many afghans she made for me and my siblings, along with the ponchos, vests and skirts which were ever so stylish back then. i’ll always be grateful that she taught me how to knit and crochet as a child. those skills have stood me in good stead through the years, and i can almost picture her beside me as i ply my craft.

the afghan continues to grow…

i added two colors for the ocean, teal feathers and water green for the water and foam as the waves hit the shore. i’m not trying to make a realistic picture here, just using colors that remind me of that long ago beach, so i’m putting them in the order that i like best and think are most appealing.

childhood dreams

some of my favorite childhood memories are of visits to my grandmothers house each summer. she lived in vancouver and i loved how green everything was there compared to my prairie home. she also lived within walking distance of the ocean and we spent many days playing in the sand and surf. so when meg asked for a new summery afghan to go in their wicker swing, i had to make something that was reminiscent of those carefree days. i’ll save the garden theme for another day but here is the start of my ocean dreams throw.

persian dreams kal

i’m in a esk kal and adapted it so i could make dresses for my girls instead of a blanket (i know it’s a stretch, but trust me it worked ;))
i still want to do a proper photoshoot when i am done, but meg tried on one of the dresses to day and i took an (embarassingly poor) cell phone picture of it.

iโ€™m not sure whether to sew solid color underskirts for the dresses, or just make coordinating leggings. what do you think?

back at last?

please forgive me for my long absence, these last few months have been challenging to say the least. my middle child has had some serious health issues that have taken up most of my time. we are hoping/praying that he is stable right now and i may be able to get back to making doll stuff and checking in to my various forums on the net, at least a little bit, anyway.

so one of my favorite yarn stores eatsleepknit is having their yearly yarnathon, and this year looks like a winner as far as i’m concerned. they are allowing us to add projects together for the kals, cals and booster club prizes, so i can work on my doll stuff and actually have it count! ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ™‚

i’ve started a new blanket for the girls couch. i’m only being cautiously optimistic ’cause i started a christmas one O_O. and i’m working on some shawls that will hopefully get done in time to wear before summer hits. everything is being done in malabrigo lace so far. its the softest lace yarn i know of that doesn’t have cashmere in it, and eatsleepknit has tons of colors!

here’s a sneak peek at my christmas blankie.
snowflakes on a snowy road
i worked on it over the holidays, so took my “on the road” pic already in hopes that they have that badge again this year. if not it seemed appropriate anyway to do a snowflake afghan in the snow.

a long haul but i’m finally done….maybe

i’ve been working on this afghan for a couple of years, including a stop when i ran out of yarn and had to order more! i really wanted to do at least one blanket in a really fine scale, so this is done in cobweb weight yarn using a 1mm hook.

now i’m just trying to decide whether it is done and can be blocked as is, or do i need a border to really make it look finished.

what do you think?
