vacation pictures.

i’m finally getting around to posting my vacation pictures from the summer. cricket, meg and eilidh went with us to the yukon and alaska for 10 days. we had a wonderful time! the scenery is gorgeous and the weather was nice and cool. we missed the heat wave back home for which we were all thankful. we got back to cooler weather and the next week the yukon got their heat wave, so perfect timing on our part. we did a bit of hiking and a lot of exploring. here are some of my favorite pictures of cricket (wearing her new sweater and hat)

we landed in whitehorse then drove down to skagway
we were driving along through the mountains then suddenly saw sand on the side of the road. when we pulled over there was this amazing stretch of sand dunes which we explored for a couple of hours before driving on.
inland desert
carcross desert yukon is apparently the world’s smallest desert. but cricket thought it was the perfect size.

exploring the beautiful grounds of the cabins where we stayed in skagway, right near the base of the chilkoot trail. we went on a 2 hour hike up the trail, which was fun. my health isn’t good enough to actually hike the whole thing (apparently a 4-6 day hike!)

we also took the train up the whitehorse pass. part of the historic goldrush trail
on the train
cricket was fascinated and stared out the window the whole way.

after a couple of days we took the ferry across to haines. we managed to do a couple of hikes there as well

ananda, shaelyn, meg and i spent a lovely snowy weekend at chateau lake louise. the snow fell almost continuously with those lovely fat light flakes drifting down endlessly, muffling the sound and obscuring the view. when we woke up this morning we could see that almost a foot of snow had fallen while we were there. yesterday ananda and i went for a walk around the lake. i got some great glamor shots of the new minifee sweaters i’ve been making. the snow was so deep that i couldn’t take pictures of the skirts. the girls only had shoes to wear with the skirts and that looked really silly with the snow anywhere from their ankles to their hips, so we concentrated on sweaters instead and got some great shots! i’ll be putting the best ones up over the next week or so and working hard to get all of them up in the shop as well.

shaelyn decided to play diva and refused to go out for the walk, she said she had only brought her dress boots, so she stayed back at the lodge with meg – who forgot her stockings and got too cold. meg and shaelyn read books in front of the fire in the lounge and flirted with all the boys in town for the world cup ski race next weekend while we were out.

on the walk ananda and i discovered a ledge hung with a curtain of snowflakes. it was the prettiest and most delicate thing i’ve ever seen

i was so focused on these cones that i forgot to get a bigger picture so i would know what they are. they look like pine cones but the tree was leafless

i do love the way the photos came out, with only the cone in focus and the background blurred. i’m starting to figure out how to get the photo i’m trying for 🙂
