headphones!

  • Posted on June 22, 2017 at 3:23 pm

found these adorable headphones at the dollar store and couldn’t resist picking up a couple to see if they would fit. they are actually air fresheners, and although they are a smidge big, for $1.25 they aren’t bad at all. i think they would fit the larger minifee heads perfectly or should be good for my kid delf.

the top is a hard plastic ring, the bottom is soft and rubbery so no change of dolly damage. i think i could take the bottoms off, shorten the “stem” just a smidge and glue them back on to get a perfect fit. i’ll try that later….

all done and blocking

  • Posted on June 18, 2017 at 10:46 pm

got the border finished. now time to soak it and block it flat. i tried out my new blocking wires. once i threaded it through the edges and figured out how to pin it, i was impressed with how easy it is to block straight and square.

blocking

went to publish this post and found out someone had hacked my blog and replaced my posts with a bunch of yucky pictures. i almost cried. luckily my husband was able to delete it all and use the backup to get my posts back. if you happened to come here while the x-rated stuff was up, you have my sincerest apologies and hopefully we have got it fixed so they can’t come back!

nearing completion

working on the borders now. a good border ties all the colors together and is like a frame for the main picture. this afghan seemed to require a more elaborate “frame” than just a simple sc border. i’m liking it so far, though my need for a good blocking becomes more evident the further i get.

i added two colors for the ocean, teal feathers and water green for the water and foam as the waves hit the shore. i’m not trying to make a realistic picture here, just using colors that remind me of that long ago beach, so i’m putting them in the order that i like best and think are most appealing.

childhood dreams

  • Posted on May 24, 2017 at 9:58 am

some of my favorite childhood memories are of visits to my grandmothers house each summer. she lived in vancouver and i loved how green everything was there compared to my prairie home. she also lived within walking distance of the ocean and we spent many days playing in the sand and surf. so when meg asked for a new summery afghan to go in their wicker swing, i had to make something that was reminiscent of those carefree days. i’ll save the garden theme for another day but here is the start of my ocean dreams throw.

persian dreams kal

  • Posted on March 4, 2017 at 5:46 pm

i’m in a esk kal and adapted it so i could make dresses for my girls instead of a blanket (i know it’s a stretch, but trust me it worked ;))
i still want to do a proper photoshoot when i am done, but meg tried on one of the dresses to day and i took an (embarassingly poor) cell phone picture of it.

i’m not sure whether to sew solid color underskirts for the dresses, or just make coordinating leggings. what do you think?

follow the dotted line

i finally got round to uploading the pictures of my 5th shawl. this one was very loosely inspired by melanie bergs shawl drachenfels. i like the color combination and the juxtaposition of dots and lines

i dream of summer

while writing up my tale of two cities scarf, i realized that some minor changes in the number of rows between the stripes would make them work out better. meg picked two colors for the new scarf and i knit it up again. it came out a smidge bigger, but we both liked it that way – and it was easier to knit. you’d only notice the size change if you lay them out side by side anyway.

i like her choice of colors. it makes me think of summer, even though the ground is covered with snow.

both the shawl and it’s name are inspired by a melanie berg shawl called 5190 miles. her name celebrates the distance between the two cities of the collaborators on her shawl. mine of course is named after the dickens novel.
melanie’s shawl was lovely, but both the size and stitch used were out of scale for my doll, so i rewrote it completely with a different stitch that made a similar look, but in the correct scale.

sweet as candy

i really like this one.
sweet as candy
the colors are so bright and cheerful. they were inspired by the theme of this years yarnathon “candyland”. but i can also see this shawl done in jewel tones on black, or shades of blue on cream or… well you get the picture. i plan to make up some more after i get a couple of other projects done.

it came out the perfect size for a nice thick shawl for an msd or ellowyne, but i’m pretty sure it would also work as a somewhat smaller size for american girl sized dolls or even an sd.

i’m hoping to get the pattern typed, proofed and up on ravelry in the next few weeks.

here are some more pictures just ’cause i love it so much
