i dream of summer

while writing up my tale of two cities scarf, i realized that some minor changes in the number of rows between the stripes would make them work out better. meg picked two colors for the new scarf and i knit it up again. it came out a smidge bigger, but we both liked it that way – and it was easier to knit. you’d only notice the size change if you lay them out side by side anyway.
i dream of summer
i like her choice of colors. it makes me think of summer, even though the ground is covered with snow.

tale of two cities

both the shawl and it’s name are inspired by a melanie berg shawl called 5190 miles. her name celebrates the distance between the two cities of the collaborators on her shawl. mine of course is named after the dickens novel.
melanie’s shawl was lovely, but both the size and stitch used were out of scale for my doll, so i rewrote it completely with a different stitch that made a similar look, but in the correct scale.

all part of the process

i decided to knit my realfees some striped sweaters, and crochet coordinating funky hats. i wanted something that would be more suitable for the boys, or at least unisex. i tried, as much as possible, to carry the ends along so i’d have less to sew in, but i still ended up with this!
What was I thinking?

after sewing in all the ends i ended up with a pile of yarn bits almost as big as the pile of sweaters/hats

The finished piles

i still have to add snaps and make some pants to go with them so my dolls aren’t indecently exposed 😉 but then i’ll take more pictures and eventually one of each color will end up in my etsy store.

New chair, new bear

  • Posted on February 17, 2016 at 2:21 pm

amber takes a break from test fitting her new hat to checkout the bargain chair we got in the clearance section of pier one (it’s a cell phone holder and was marked down from $23 to less than $6 so we snagged both of them 😉 )

New chair, new bear

she is also cuddling a new bear by honeythorpe, the little girls were much more excited with that parcel than my usual purchases and are having battles over who gets the bear. last i saw they were drawing up time sheets!
we may have to have another lesson on sharing :lol but amber got first dibs as her reward for patiently sitting and letting me try my new crochet hat pattern on her. i still have to sew ends in, crochet the trim and block the flaps to take out some of the curl….so it actually sits like it is in the picture.

i’ve got patterns worked out for my pukifee, littlefee and minifee sizes now, but am running into a snag on the realfee size. they have such big elf/animal ears that the ear flaps just look silly and plain caps are too boring so i’m still trying to decide what to do for them. i’ve done lacey berets before but i wanted something that was a closer fit.

quantum education

i thought it would be interesting to show the books in use to get an idea of the scale and how realistic they look, so here is meg busily study a text on quantum physics in her dorm room

a rug completed

  • Posted on June 14, 2015 at 9:27 pm

i chose to complete the rug by trimming the edge back to about 5 rows past the stitching line, cutting a wedge out of the corner to cut down the bulk, then folding it back and satin stitching around the edge with a very narrow stitch in the pink.. after that i used a loose whip stitch and stitched the edging down flat to the back, catching only a stitch or two at a time so it wouldn’t show through on the front. now it looks just like the full sized rugs i have in my house, and the little girls are thrilled. crystal is showing it off here
The finished rug
after i was done someone pointed me to a great tutorial on how to finish rugs, so rather than re-inventing the wheel, i’ll just link to it here

set back and regroup

my supposedly preshrunk mercerized cotton shrunk just enough after dyeing that now the cap is too small. i stretched it as much as possible and it still goes round her head but you can see that it is now too short. 🙁 i have ordered more yarn in the right color, since the reason i dyed this in the first place is that i can only get white locally. i will probably put a white lacy trim on the too small caps for her to wear when she just doesn’t feel like bothering with hair, so it won’t be a total loss, but still….

in the meantime, i wound off a small skein of yarn and dyed it with coffee again. as soon as it finishes drying i will make another cap (or 2)

ruby looks as disgruntled as i am. mercerized cotton is NOT supposed to shrink. that is one of the reasons i used it instead of one of the dozens of other fine yarns i have lying around.

abandoned dock

  • Posted on August 15, 2013 at 5:14 pm

we went up to see mica dam (outside of revestoke bc). as it turned out we couldn’t actually get close to the dam and since i had the macro lens on my camera i couldn’t get any shots that really looked like much, but the road to it was lovely, and there were several neat places to explore where the old highway went in and out of the river(lake?) now that the water level is higher because of the dams. i’ll be posting pictures over the next week or so as i get them uploaded.

here is the first set: eilidh exploring an abandoned dock.
apparently several of the places the highway disappears into the lake make good boat launches, but this one isn’t being used for anything anymore. still i found it rather picturesque. eilidh just thought it was fun! 😉
